Who is my target audience?
My Target audience Is going to be mostly boys and a small minority of girls just so we can have a fair mixed. And because its just breaking a stereotype that girls may not be interested in sports. It’s mostly going to be aimed at boys because most of the schools population is made out of boys. These boys age range are from 11-16 year olds which are ks3 and ks4. The front cover topic is going to relate to Sport simply because When I gave my questionnaire on "what would you rather read about", all of the 4 boys and 1 girl ticked the sports box. These boys/girl were from the years 7, 8,9,10&11. This would be a successful topic of a cover page because as my questionnaire proves that’s what most boys within that age range are interested in reading along with their other hobbies. However this is also complicated because with sports comes so many categories of things you can class as sport so I will be mainly focusing on subjects such as football, basketball, badminton and many other sports within the school curriculum. I will also be introducing new things to the audience for females as I am aiming to break the typical conventions of sports magazines being aimed at boys only and i am intending on making it more unisex for example I will be including stories such as cheer leading, and other sports both boys and girls will be interested in.
My target audience will because expecting interesting stories such as sports events, things that have taken place around sports, those themselves or their peers may have participated in. This will engage the reader because it creates a more personal bond with the reader’s passion, engaging them to continue reading and therefore successfully informing them and entertaining them.
Potential sell lines for Sports school magazine:
-How to improve your inner Ozil
-Don’t believe the hype! Bring sports alive!
-Having trouble in badminton?
-Are you the man that’s going to lead RHS football team to victory? Continue reading to see how you can try out for football captain
-Bring fifa 14 alive!
-Forget GTA, come and play!
-How to become an expert in trampolining
The layout of the front cover is going to be more cluttered because my target audience will find it more eye catching and interesting as this magazine is guaranteed to have everything a typical school pupil is looking for, especially because the majority of readers will be of a male gender they
will be more interested in what It has to say.In addition boys wouldnt be interested in something with one neat sell line as it would seem boring. I've particularly come up with this conclusion by researching sports magazines such as kick, a young boys sports magazine so i will be using some ideas from that magazine to target the 11-13 year old's specifically as it has bigger, bolder, font which shows how serious it is about sports.
Evaluation of magazine and contents page
Through out my project of my front cover and contents page I have been exploring many ideas as to how I can make my magazine most suitable towards my target audience in order to make it a more enjoyable and attractive product.
I began by experimenting with the colour schemes, but in the end the colour scheme was determined by a number of aspects, one being a colour in which all students can recognize as the school colour which is navy blue. This was a perfect choice because although it's easily recognizable as it is embedded in our minds it is also a calm unisex colour so both genders of the target audience wouldn't be intimidated if they were to approach this magazine.
The only way I managed to find out what my target audience like and how I ended up choosing sports is because I made a questionnaire for years 7-11 for every 4 boys I had one girl to balance it out as there are more boys then girls. I had five people do the questionnaire and all of which ticked the sports box as there preference.
Also the colours blue, red and white clashes very well together and they compliment each other. It creates a sense of patriotism as not only are they colours of our school but they are also the colours of the Union Jack. This creates a sense of pride with our readers as we a recently had the Olympics held in London which is something that will really motivate our readers to continue reading.
I have decided to use my friend Yasmin as the cover star because as we can see she is a very athletic young girl who will be a terrific role model for many insecure girls out their who may want to Pursuit cheerleading or any other sport for that matter but may be convinced that they might not have the talent but Yasmin proves them wrong therefore she is a girl you could easily relate to. The picture is very self explanatory but the way it is laid out, it's almost as if the reader was their. You have the foreground, the middle which is Yasmin giving direct mode of address which helps communicate with our audience in a more personal way and the back ground which is the blue sky. The blue sky is very important as it connotes dreams which can be reached even though the sky seems far, girls like Yasmin still manage to fulfil their dreams no matter what issues they may come against whether it's confidence issues or social issues such as sexism. Although my main target are boys I did want to keep in mind the girls as it's only fair we include them and break this typical stereotype that only boys like sport. On the contrary the fact I use a female on the front cover plays a key role as boys maybe more interested to read more as they may find this as a new opportunity to find different sports such as cheerleading to take up rather than the usual football etc.
We then have the 4 girls at the bottom, 2 in which we can see and the other 2 which are less visible. We hardly notice this but it allows my readers to consume everything in the frame and allow them to see what team work goes on in sports which is what it is about.
In addition Yasmin is of a middle class working family so it gives hope to those who may think they don't have the right social class.
The sell lines are more humorous rather than dead serious because my target audience are more laid back, they are the new generation raised in a language of abbreviations and slang so they wouldn't want to be reading something beyond their understanding as It would take all the joy out of the magazine. I created sell lines such as "how to release your inner ozil" for my magazine due to the fact that my target audience are mainly boys so I had to balance it out to make sure both boys and girls get the best of both world in sports; girls having cheerleaders and boys having football.
I choose ozil imparticular because he has been in the headlines recently as being arsenals saviour and many of my readers are arsenal fans. He is also a role model for our audience which helps us interact more on a personal level so it's not unfair any magazine it's your magazine which you will be able to communicate with.
Through out the process I have explored many fonts which I thought may be liable to be used in my front cover. In the end I made up a decision and decided which font I was going to use.
-Regents in MotionThis title was criticized for not being related to sports enough. My teacher must have described it as a moving train.
-slogan: don't stop believing

-Ultimate sports
-slogan: Reach for your goal
This font is called alfa slab and just by its name I can interpret
that its meant to be big and bold. However when I compare it to the regent
rover font it doesnt have as much of an effect as the armalite rifle.
Also its similar to the second font for regent rover, they both look prestigious and the serif's add an extra sort of posh effect.
-Regent Rovers
This name sounds very intriguing as it sounds very in your face which will attract my audience because boys do seem to be rowdy and full of life and energy. It will make you want to continue reading to find out who the regents rovers are.

This font is called Armalite Rifle and it would be a good font for my magazine because its very dramatic and it has a sort of competitive effect. Its speaking for the school giving it and edge saying were the regent rovers and were here for business, were here to win. The font that I have used here is called chunk five. I will not be sticking to the colour black but in fact navy blue and red outline just to make it more traditional and patriarchal towards the school.
The slogan will be " Its not just sport, Its RHS sport" simply because it sounds prestigious just like how our school wants to come across as and its humorous as people may associate it with marks and spencers because of its memorable slogan "its not just food, its M&S food".
This would also be a good slogan because its singling out our school, so its not just anyone playing sports, its rhs students doing their school proud so theirs a sense of pride.
I decided to use Regents Rovers with the font called armalite rifle as it seems very bold, strong and feisty, almost competitive which is the sort of spirit and atmosphere I wanted my audience to feel when they picked up this magazine. It also creates a sense of pride as it is a name you would want to say your apart of. Seeing as my target audience are 11-16 year olds, it seems like a good idea because it gives them a sense of belonging which is something many young adults take comfort in while they are trying to find themselves and there true personalities. Maslow would refer to them as Aspirers. In order for the target audience to interact with the magazine on a more personal level outside school I have added the two most used social networking sites; Twitter and Facebook. I have used these 2 in particular because most of my audience have these accounts and use them on a daily basis, I am speaking on my behalf as well as I fall within this target audience. With this advantage my audience will be able to interact with the sports magazine 24/7 and feel apart of something bigger. Its almost as if they have the say. This creates competition within the groups of people at school, stirring more speculation and getting more people to talk about the magazine. This is known as viral marketing.
In the contents page I have kept the background plane white just to give it a sense of formality so my target audience can take it more seriously and will think the magazine appreciates there customs. I have used the font Armalite rifle for the contents page just to let it link back to the front cover, giving the magazine an identity. I have a small R logo so the audience will automatically realise what magazine we are talking about. I have used the Rockwell font as it its quite similar to the armalite but it is more sophisticated. I have used it because although I want to make my magazine look bold I also want to make it prestigious and classy, especially because the magazine has serifs. The colours I have decided to use are black, white, red and navy blue. The only two outside colours I have decided to used are grey and Pink in order to highlight those stories even more. On the other hand I have used the colours; bleu, black, red and white because they clash well with the front cover as it creates a sense of continuity with the reader.
I have decided to use shahel as one of the contents picture because his posture is very positive letting off positive vibes letting my audience feel more at home. Although I have to admit it was the best quality, it had to do considering the resources I had and time. I have also used a picture of the school gym just to be able to promote it. With that full shot angle the audience are able to capture the entire locations in order to promote it.
