Halls encoding/decoding:
My preferred reading for my music magazine will be that my pre dominantly female target audience will aspire to be like Cleo because of her social back ground and what she had managed to become; famous and successful.
Bulmer and Katz 'Uses and Gratifications':
Although I have my own idea of what I want my audience to read I also want to support the idea that my audience are also able to make their own ideas. I will do this by applying social networking apps which will promote the idea of being able to communicate with the producers of the magazine as well as promoting pluralistic views. The four reasons for the use of 'uses and gratifications' are personal relationships and escapism (being able to aspire to be like my cover star), surveillance and personal identity.
This contributes well with Maslow's hierarchy of needs and the need for the person to be able to fulfil something in their lives which is why I am using a relatable cover star from a similar background and similar taste in style.
Richard Dyer Star Theory:
In order to establish my artists reputation she needs to build one. This will be done through her persona. My niche genre allows her to develop a unique persona as she is offering a different sound to the youth of today and therefore a different culture. As well as offering a different sound she will also be constructed to look like the 'real people' who are my target audience in order to create a personal connections. This will make my artist more relatable and down to earth. The three components of Richard Dyer's 'Star Theory' are hegemony, audiences and institutions and constitutions.
Although my artists is there to be able to connect with my audience and entertain them she will also be looking to make a profit. In order to ensure this her star image needs to be authentic and relatable to become a house hold brand. Hegemony is also addressed and culture and is the way in which audiences can relate to an artist based on their back ground because they have something in common with them. An artists star image can affect the audience in several ways; from specific language used to the type of clothes worn. Rihanna for example uses a nick name which her target instantly recognises because have been able to build that bond with her.
Language:
Because my audience will be interested in keeping up with the latest trends my selling lines will consisted of quotes from famous music artists. This links to the idea of compulsive buying and the idea that my audience need to purchase this magazine in order to be happy and to ensure that they are up to date and fit in.
Direct mode of address: I intend on using shots of my cover star with the use of direct mode of address. This is because direct contact will engage my audience on a personal level and ensure that they feel a personal connection with my artist.
